Can we get real for a moment. 1) We use mind altering substance such as marijuana because if makes us feel good. 2) It's in our biological nature to move toward pleasure and away form pain. 3) For normal healthy humans, sexual sensuality provides the ultimate pleasure. So then, where did all this anti-pleasure stuff come from? If you were brought up in any variation of Christianity, you don't need any help answering this question. This leads us to a fundamental question: "Does avoiding pleasure and avoiding sexual sensuality provide us with significant benefits, or are intentional suffering and self deprivation simply holdovers from an antiquated religious belief system?" Centuries ago when Christianity dominated Europe, people were taught that pleasure was demonic and that pain, grief, and misery were good because suffering brought one closer to God. Many people still hold this belief, but are their beliefs an expression of reality or are they simply beliefs about reality. Remember. reality is whatever reality is, regardless of what we believe. The Earth is still round even if we believe it's flat. We may believe it's flat and behave as if it's flat. If you are an average human being, that belief may work for you, but if you are a rocket scientist, it doesn't. There are some aspects of life where we must face reality. For example, for centuries, human have functioned as if we could destroy our environment and not reap the consequences of our destruction. When there were only a few of us, that belief worked, but with a human population of over six billion humans on the planet at the same time, it doesn't. There are also aspects of life where understanding what what the rules of reality are and how to use them can greatly enhance the joys of our human experience. Understanding the nature of our sexuality is one of those areas.
Saint
(anti-sexual) Augustine:
Here's an
excerpt from Chapter 51 of my online
book, An Interview with the
Devil. T.L.C. Who was Saint Augustine. Big D He was a fourth century, reformed sinner who translated the beliefs of his time into what, today, is the core of Christian religious doctrine. He believed that: ** The Earth was flat, -- ** A superhuman being, called God lived in the sky above the Earth in a place called heaven, ** A super-evil being called Satan lived beneath the Earth's surface in a place called Hell, ** God and Satan were constantly at war, * Humans lived only once or Earth and then, after death, went to heaven of hell forever, ** Humans had to please God to get into heaven, ** If they failed to please God, they spent eternity burning in Hell ** The more a person suffered, and the more he deprived himself of the pleasures of life, the closer he was to God. After years of being a sexual thrill seeker, Augustine turned to the Catholic church and became an equally-obsessive, self-righteous crusader for sexual abstinence. His beliefs became church doctrine and they are, still today, the core of Christian theology. He also believed that prostitution was a necessary evil. T.L.C. So let me see if I have this correct. God made folks with strong, compulsive, sexual desires and then said that the best people were those who don’t have sex. Big D Yup. T.L.C. Are you sure it was God who created this? Big D Like I just said, this is actually one of Saint Augustine’s personal beliefs that became Christian church doctrine. T.L.C. Was Augustine speaking for God? Big D Some people still believe that church leaders have a direct and exclusive access to God, and that Augustine's anti-sexual beliefs are God's truth. ' T.L.C. You imply that they are wrong. Big D I'm not implying anything. I'm saying that there is no evidence to support the belief that there is such a thing as an anthropomorphic God, or that there is a God living in the sky, or that ultra-conservative Christian leaders have exclusive access to the whatever it is we call God, or that sex is evil. In spite of the complete lack of any supporting evidence, the Christian fundamentalists are still preaching Augustine's anti-pleasure anti-sex message. They preach it as if it actually were the truth. They justify promoting human misery by telling their followers the same thing that Saint (anti-sex) Augustine believed and wrote into Christian theology: that Earth-life is a one-time-only experience -- that Earth-life is a testing ground to see if you are good enough to get into heaven -- that the more you suffer, the closer you are to God -- that pleasure and sex are the devil's playground -- and that suffering is your ticket to heaven. End of Quote
Readers are directed to a humorous, light-hearted look at Christian anti-sexuality: An Interview with the Devil -- Chapter 51 -- Original Sin and the Source of Anti-Sexual Attitudes. You can find it at: http://www.Devil-Devil.info/ch-151-original-sin.html The Bottom Line: The overwhelming evidence leads to these conclusions: 1) Today's anti-pleasure and anti-sex beliefs are holdovers from the fourth-century, Christian doctrine (rules for behavior) written into Roman Catholic theology by reformed-sinner, turned-crusader, Saint (anti-sexual) Augustine. 2) The supposed benefits of denying pleasure and sex presently promoted by Christian fundamentalists are not supported by any evidence that can be verified by scientific analysis. The evidence is pointing in exactly the opposite direction.
So if you
are willing to step beyond any lingering
inhibitions, you are invited to examine
the relationship between marijuana
and sexual sensuality. . |
